AstaroOS: One touch upgrades for software appliances
At the moment you have to do a full reinstall from ISO on software appliances when a new major version (like UTM 9) comes out. This means you loose all your logs, reporting data, quarantine mails, etc.
Though I understand the problems with unknown or unsupported hardware in new versions It would be great to have the same one-touch experience like hardware appliance users.
Offer a "real" one-touch upgrade as on hardware appliances and warn the user that this process is on his own risk. If it fails because of the hardware he can still do a fresh ISO-install.

Actually i can see Astaro's concern due to the myriad hardware configurations involved with software. here's another idea: give us the ability to export the logs out of the system via webadmin. We do the reinstall..then import the logs back into the new system. I have clients with HIPAA concerns and other mandates so loosing hte logs is NOT an option.

Frankly, this should be easily implemented. The number one issue that would have been a problem before V8.*** was that your NICs were in danger of being re-arranged after a new install was done... now with the tools to update UDEV from the backup, I see no reason why this shouldn't be available as an option. We manage several custom hardware configs for customers, and the lack of this feature can make major updates tedious.

As you can read here, there will be no Ín-Place-Upgrade for software appliances: http://www.astaro.org/astaro-gateway-products/hardware-installation-up2date-licensing/43417-utm-9-000-soft-released.html#post208427
There was no such thing for v7 --> v8 for software appliances.I know that a fresh ISO reinstall has some benefits in some special cases. So wouldn't it be nice to do a fresh ISO install and have the option to keep all logs, reporting data and quarantines?

I use astaro software and astaro has announced they are going to do an in place upgrade from v8 to v9 soon. this has been the case for software apliances for a long time(the software upgrades are always delayed due to upgrade testing which can be complex). However iso upgrading in this case DOES give some benefits depending on system configuration, environment..etc etc etc.

William, do you have a hardware appliance or a software version?
I startet with v7 and to v8 and now to v9 there was/is/will be no one touch upgrade for software versions on your own hardware. -

Past few versions you have only had to wait a bit after ga for upgrades from versions and it works. I've not lost anything.

Hi Steven,
I've adjust your request slightly to include only the ability to one-touch upgrade for software appliances: The second part you mentioned about USB export of logs, reporting, quarantine etc..is tracked separately already.
