YIPPIE...................... I totally agree. I am a newby to astaro software and appliances, i only have 2 appliances at customers, and a home user on my house, but allready one customer is having issues with employees trying to get around the astaro they have. I'd absolutely LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! if astaro would let us totally disable the mention of 'ASTARO' on blocked page, login prompts, emails etc. SUPER DUPER IDEA

I LOVE this idea! The little angels at the school I work for are masters at getting around firewalls. I believe it would be harder for them if they didn't know what was blocking them, OR we were able to change the message to give a little misdirection as to what was blocking them.

This is a BIGGIE to me too. I agree it is too easy for employees to get around the astaro. We've called tech support about it, and they offer not much help. try this, try that. whats your log look like. There is no need to look at log files. First step is to disable the 'Astaro' words on login pages, prompts, content blocked pages, user login pages, spam reports etc. Basically we gave up and are now using a combination of opendns, with a forward in our dns server for *.opendns.com to go to our own content blocked by our company webpage. so noone can know we're using opendns and that opendns is blocking them from going to ebay. LOL! They spend too much time on craigs list and ebay. This solved the problem for now. We're playing with untangle also since they offer a customizable logo so we can do our own internal company logo in stead of the astaro logo. It's working so far in the lab. But I hope Astaro will implement this so I can get that tech off that project. My boss is mandating we get untangle, opendns, caching opendns, and/or astaro with a permanent solution. Please astaro do this, your product works, it just needs this one final tweek. JN

@CitiGroupIT - I suggest opening a discussion on the forum and/or a support case if you have a support contract. End Users will only be able to get around the content filter if it is configured with a manner in which to do so. There are ways to configure the system so that no user will be able to bypass it.

      • Tim CroninTim Cronin commented  ·   ·  Flag as inappropriate

This is possible currently on a per-case basis (as a workaround while this request is being evaluated). If you have a support contract, an evaluation or would like to plan an evaluation and this is a stumbling block, please let your support engineer know. If necessary, let them know to contract Tim in support US.

This is interesting. I was talking to my boss about how his teenager is getting around the astaro home version content filtering. I keep working on how he gets around it over and over. People/employees that see the content block message etc. sometimes spend DAYS trying to figure out how to get around it. I AGREE with everyone above. Please astaro, let us disable all mention of astaro to the end users we're managing. Here's a problem I'm working on currently with our end users at the bank I work at trying to get around opendns content filtering. http://forums.opendns.com/comments.php?DiscussionID=3562&page=1#Item_0

I agree, I also work for a government agency. We cannot use astaro, I've showed my boss my home version, he likes it. We need to be able to disable all 'VERBAGE' indicating who made the firewall/vpn/spam box etc. someone above noted that also.

Someone on another feature request said they wanted a customizable page for end user messages. I agree and would add that they must disable the "Powered by Astaro" or references. Those employees don't need to know what service is blocking them.

As a sysadmin with two 220 appliances and 400+ users, I must say this is a brilliant idea. It would give us the flexibility we need to have ultimate control over our employees seeming constant attempts to circumvent our security. In tracking our employees' Google searches, we find an inordinate amount of "how to get around Astaro" searches which is very disturbing. As a suggestion, I would also disable Astaro wording from the email end user quarantine and logon page as well as the web page the end user sees when they attempt to surf to an inappropriate site.

I forgot to say, We love our astaro units, but we can't expose them to the net due to policy and privacy constraints. For example, they login logo on port 4444 still does NOT have the capability of disabling the 'Astaro' logo or color bands. Who all remembers when we booted cisco for not getting rid of their 'cisco login page'. I hope 'Astaro' addresses this soon. We bought some 525's and they're sitting on the shelf at this point due to the policy and not being to disable them.

I work for a gov't agency and I have to say this is our #1 priority for a vendor. Is 'BLACKING' their units to make the end users not know what they're logging into, or what kind of systems we have, so they can't figure out how to get around them. Also, so the information doesn't 'LEAK' to the public or to our enemies so they can have an easier time hacking into our gov't machines.

Also for blocking kids from going to porn sites. soon as they know whats blocking them. their group of kiddies start searching the web to try to figure out how to get around it. or that's my experience working on computers since 1976. And also, sometimes one of our 476 employees try to get around it also. HAHA.

      • Mitchell ParksMitchell Parks commented  ·   ·  Flag as inappropriate

Because of END USERS> haha, Soon as they see a banner for what blocked them. like an opendns block, they go to opendns or other forums and figure out how to undo and get around them. Same for 'Powered by Astaro' its not good for end users to know what's blocking them. Just the business owner and the IT dept need to know.

I can see why one would want greater flexibility in adding things, but why remove "Astaro" or its logo?
