Hello,
we very often have the situation, that our customers send us mails with BMS-ffiles attached instead of using PNG or GIF.
I want to have an option, that I can define, which attachments can be converted from BMP to PNG or GIF. Maybe this can be combined with a ruleset so that I also can define, that a LOG or TXT-Attachment can be zipped, if it is greater than a limited file size.
This feature will save a lot of space on our mail-server and also on our POP3-clients.

I don't want to buy an external solution. My ideas can be realized with some cheap OpenSource tools. They only need to be integrated in ASG and made available via web frontend.

I don't like to pimp other companies, but I implemented a solution from www.accellion.com to handle issues like large file attachments in email. It works like the solution you would like -- the system strips attachments from email messages and inserts a link that the recipient then clicks on to download the file.

We just bought another solution. M$ Exchange has never been an option.

Consider that in most cases the mail server optimize itself the occupation of attachment. For example in Exchange the comlessive size of1 message in which there is 1 file 10mb size and addressed to 30 recipients IS NOT 300mb but 10mb.

Our customers in most cases simply add BMP-Screenshots. A good JPEG, PNG or GIF (if less than 256 colors used) is a very good solution. Maybe the proxy can add a link to the mail (configurable) with a download-option, where the original attachment is stored on the Astaro.
Let me explain a little bit more, why I want to have this feature:

We are a IT service company and our customers are "only" users. Some mails with large BMP attachments (or other data files) are sent to the support group with more than 30 recipients. Very often, the size exceeds 10MB per mail.
Thus, I think, conversion & compression is a very good idea.

In this way, if a Graphic Division send an high resolution file by mail it will loose details... (
obviously it's better to use ftp transterts in order to exchange high resolution files images)
I think that this function will produce a lot of confusion in users

Oh... before you advise me to tell our customers to use other file formats... they'll never learn to do so. Blocking BMP or TIFF is not an option.
